He needed time to digest all the wonders of mutual aid that he had been privy to in Siberia. And he was beginning to believe that most of the people that were doing science in Russia at the time were “philistine”2 autocrats who were more concerned with preserving the government than advancing knowledge. Above all, Peter’s passion for science was temporarily eclipsed by politics.

47 In its place, toward the end of his five years at the University of St. Petersburg, Peter was sent by the Russian Geographical Society on a tour of Sweden and Finland to explore their glacial deposits.
