The gradual increase in logging mechanisation (which removes the need for manual felling) has helped reduce the risk of some of the serious injuries, but may be introducing alternative risks, for example due to long periods of time seated in machines. In New Zealand, musculoskeletal disorders have had little attention, as injuries of a more serious nature have been the focus of ergonomics safety and health research and intervention. There are many tasks in logging (harvesting) and silviculture (planting and tending trees) which contain factors known to be associated with musculoskeletal disorders.

However, only a small number of individuals contribute to the disability statistics and it is, therefore, a small number of individuals that account for the substantial costs to industry and the state. Additionally, though, there is also a group of individuals who take short, recurrent absences and also incur substantial costs to industry in terms of lost production. There is a clear need to investigate the factors which may predict, (and/or contribute to), a progression to chronicity or recurrent absence.

Stage 1—Operator surveys To gain further information on the prevalence of MSDs among tree harvester operators and possible causes, two operator surveys were designed and administered. These surveys incorporated the HSE version of the Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire and questions covering psychosocial and physical design issues.
