A loyal and loving son, Gregor feels obligated to pay off his parents舗 debt. Simply quitting would betray that loyalty. After his transformation, Gregor overhears his family discuss their bleak financial situation and feels 舠flushed with shame and grief舡 (p. 27). He despairs of the prospect of any one of his family members, especially his sister Grete, working to make ends meet.

Though he laments his obligation, he never gives it up. Failure is precisely what he expected and resolved to accomplish舒and he hid behind it. Kafka舗s literature has no end, no borders like those that frame Escher舗s artworks. He does not write in black and white. And unlike Escher, Kafka was unable to manage the subject of liberation with any success.
