Then it was, there was no water here [on the high ground with mounds]. Am hihim, ha-pionc i:dam O'odham c ab ha-we:m i waikadahi, k ab wodwa. Am ha-ma: g su:dadagi, e:p. Waikpa da:p hegai su:dagi. It went on, the Pimas worked for them and ditched with them, and they laid it. That gave them water again. Three ways split the water. In i ha'ap, a:cim, i:ya bekc a:cim mac am s-edaof ki:. Over here, us, here we have it who live at the middle [canal]. Whenever the water would stop [in the Salt River Valley], well we here will be the last to stop [getting water, according to law].
For one thing, just as the allotments were never sold to outsiders, neither were they sold, bartered, or given to insiders. In other words, no internal land market or land exchange ever developed. The original plots on the 1909 map are still the plots at Salt River as far as ownership is concerned.
