Attempts to alleviate the distress by challenging this very basic moral belief will be resisted. • Victim resistance. This is resistance caused by the client’s view that his or her misfortunes are the fault of others. Such persons require validation and acknowledgment of their own innocence and others’ guilt. When they perceive that the therapist is not providing such validation, resistance may result. • Risk aversion. Leahy suggests that one aspect of resistance seen particularly in depressed persons is that they typically see the risks of change as involving a greater likelihood of negativity and loss than of positivity and gain.
