W e are, of course, aware that the mountain does not represent a pictorial element peculiar to Christianity but has a wide religio-historical usage. The "Christian" in this context, implies that the use of the motif within the type of iconography being examined here, appears to have biblical literary material as its primary source of inspiration. The development towards a pictorial program mainly rooted in biblical imagery is carried further in the apses of Paulinus of Nola (see p. 90) and very likely reflects one of the most important driving forces behind the process of iconographical development in the 4th century.
