1919舖Tradition and the Individual Talent舗 (1919) appears in The Egoist. 1920Poems 1920 and a book of criticism, The Sacred Wood, are published. Increasing tensions with his mentally ill wife cause Eliot tremendous stress. Katherine Mansfield舗s Bliss, Edith Wharton舗s The Age of Innocence, and D. H. 1921Eliot suffers a mental breakdown. To recuperate, he travels to Margate and then to a sanitarium in Lausanne, Switzerland. The rest proves restorative and fruitful: Eliot writes his groundbreaking The Waste Land while abroad.

Eliot wrote numerous critical essays about both of them, explaining his preference for the clear, devout certainty of Dante舗s voice over what he saw as Shakespeare舗s muddled, polymorphous aesthetic.
